Oman recognised in South Korea for sponsoring UN Gender Equality award


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman's use of technology in promoting gender equality and its role as the gold sponsor of the first UN Gender Equality Mainstreaming-Technology (GEM-TECH) Award 2014 were recognised on the sidelines of the awards ceremony in Busan South Korea recently. H E Mohamed Salim al Harthy Ambassador of Oman to South Korea received the certificate from Dr Hamadoun I Touré secretary general International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

'The first UN Gender Equality Mainstreaming-Technology (GEM-TECH) Award 2014 is yet another rewarding initiative by the United Nations and is a vivid reminder to all of us that women empowerment must start from each and every one of us. We should appreciate our mothers sisters wives who are a strong pillar of our society' H E Harthy said.

The award committee has also chosen Dr Salim Sultan al Ruzaiqi CEO of ITA as a key supporter of women in ICT for the ITA's initiatives and projects to promote women empowerment. Oman has won several international awards in the United Nations Public Service Award.

In 2014 the Ministry of Health (MoH) won the first place for its project Omani Nursing and Midwife while in 2012 it won the second place for its project Reducing Child Mortality and Protecting Mothers. MoH has also won the second place for its mobile mammography unit for the Oman Cancer Association.
