Qatar- Jazz festival ends tonight

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The first Katara European Jazz Festival draws the curtain tonight with a performance by Mario Rom's Interzone, a band of three of Austria's most promising young musicians.

It is led by Rom, who despite his young age, is one of the leading trumpeters of his generation. Other members are Lukas Kranzelbinder, one of Austria's most requested bassists and Maximilian Andrzejewski, a drummer who has shared stage with every respected German musician.

The concert, which caps the five-day festival, will be held at 7pm at the courtyard behind Building 5.

Prior to it, two workshops will held at Qatar Music Academy - 'How to make your drums sing' at 1pm and 'Magnificent Brass Sounds' at 2.30pm.

The festival hosted by Katara in collaboration with five European embassies - Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland - has brought jazz performances, film screenings and workshops to the diverse audience for free.

The event, organised in partnership with Jazz Colours Festival, Paris, was launched on Tuesday with the screening of the film Michel Petrucciani at Drama Theatre.

Two concerts featuring jazz bands from Switzerland and France were held yesterday night.

Alptraum, a Swiss trio of independent and talented musicians enthralled a large number of fans.

Marco Käppeli, Nick Gutersohn and Jean-Jacques Pedretti took the audience to a musical journey through a blend of Swiss mountain alphorns, trombones and percussions.

The crowd also enjoyed the next performance by French jazz group of the well-known percussionist Bertrand Renaudin, with fellow-musicians Thierry Bonneaux on vibraphone, Jean-Louis Pommier on trombone and Yves Torchinsky on double bass.

Other bands performed on Thursday included Stefano Battaglia' Trio from Italy and Germany's Jan Schneider's Quartett.

The Italian jazz trio, under Stefano Battaglia whose most recent works take inspiration from classic and modern art, comprises some of the best known musicians in the international jazz scene.

Schneider's Quartett is a jazz combo of professional musicians who have been regular guests in jazz festivals in Europe and have produced CD recordings with musicians from a broad range of cultural backgrounds, including Arab and Iranian musical cultures.

A workshop on 'Communication in Music' was also held at the academy and the film Les Fils du vent screened at Katara Drama Theatre.
