(El Paso Texas) (10/30/2014) – As the temperatures increase in El Paso this summer homeowners will be relying more and more on their air conditioning systems for comfort and relief from the heat. And in seasons like these a spike in utility bills is the typical result for most household budgets.

“It’s pretty obvious that the more energy you use the higher your energy bills are headed” agreed Mike of SoBellas Home Services. But what’s not as obvious are the steps many homeowners can take to keep these costs in the best range possible.

“Your air conditioning system can take up to half of your energy dollars” Mike said. “So the most important thing is to make sure your system is operating efficiently. You do that through an annual tune-up on your equipment.”

While tune-ups are best left to professionals experienced and qualified for the job any homeowner can take care of changing filters regularly. “When a filter gets clogged with dirt it adds work on your system and the harder a system works the less efficient it is” Mike said. “A clean filter improves efficiency.”

Using your thermostat efficiently is another good bet. “Set it as high as you can and still be comfortable” Mike said. “It’s also a good idea to let the temperatures run warmer when you’re away and cooler when you’re at home. A programmable thermostat can help you automatically maintain an efficient cooling pattern when you’re at work or school and when you return home.”

Mike pointed out another factor that homeowners should consider. “Thermostats sense heat. If you place lamps or TV sets near your thermostat your thermostat could prompt your air conditioner to run longer than necessary.”
