Bogota Colombia: Prince Charles and his wife Camilla have arrived in Colombia’s capital to kick off a nine-day tour of Latin America.

This is the first official visit ever by the Prince of Wales to the South American nation although he visited Cartagena as a naval officer in 1974.

Charles will again visit the former colonial citadel that British forces tried unsuccessfully to wrest from Spanish control in 1741. He’ll also tour with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos the Macarena national park that was once a stronghold of Marxist rebels.

He then heads to Mexico for his fifth visit to the country.

The tour was made at the request of the British government and seeks to boost UK cooperation on issues ranging from protection for the environment to combatting narcotics.
