Former MP Charles passes away in Kerala


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Three-time Congress Member of Parliament (MP) from Trivandrum Lok Sabha constituency A Charles passed away at a private hospital here on Sunday morning.

He was 83. He had been under treatment for liver cancer. He was hospitalised after his condition worsened on October 13. He breathed his last around 9.30 am. The funeral will be held at the CSI church at Kannamoola on Monday.



A member of the Kerala Public Service Commission (PSC) Charles was brought to politics by former Chief Minister K Karuankaran with the objective of ensuring the support of the powerful Nadar community.



Charles who belonged to a family with no political background was fielded as the Congress candidate from the Trivandrum constituency in 1984. He won the election with a massive margin of 53438 votes.



He repeated the success in 1989 and 1991 and became the only person to win the poll thrice from Trivandrum. He defeated well known Malayalam poet and Jnanpith award winner ONV Kurup in 1989. In 1996 he lost the election to KV Surendranath of the Communist Party of India (CPI). Congress Working Committee (CWC) member A K Antony Chief Minister Oommen Chandy Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president V M Sudheeran and other senior leaders have condoled the death.
