The Noor Dubai Foundation has completed its third mobile eye camp for this year in Yemen. The camp is supported by Dubai Islamic Humanitarian Foundation.

Noor Dubai’s medical team screened and treated patients in Bajil town Al Hudaydah Governorate Yemen.

Essa Al Maidoor Chairman of the Noor Dubai Foundation said: “This camp is the sixth of its kind in Yemen. The foundation first conducted a camp in January 2009 and treatment was provided to 11000 individuals. The aim of this camp is to provide sight-saving treatment to patients in need.”

Dr Manal Taryam board member and CEO of the Noor Dubai Foundation said the six-day camp began on October 20 and thousands of patients suffering from vision impairment were screened and treated at the Bajil – El Hodeida camp.

“The medical team screened 3500 and conducted over 432 sight-saving operations and distributed 1200 medical glasses.

“Bajil is a small town (Bajil district) of Al Hudaydah Governorate. It is located in the north of Yemen. Bajil is about 425km away from Aden with an estimated population of 169884 inhabitants. In Yemen over one per cent of the population is blind.”

Dr Taryam said: “The main case of visual impairment in Yemen is cataract which is normally a disease of the aged but in Yemen many children are born with congenital cataract that needs to be surgically treated to avoid permanent visual loss.”

The camp was conducted with the supervision of a team of Yemeni doctors and optometrists. To date the Noor Dubai Foundation has provided its medical services and treatments to over 23 million individuals globally.

In addition to this camp a team from the foundation is scheduled to visit the Philippines next month to conduct its fourth mobile eye camp in the Lanao del Sur Province of Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.
