Former collector at Deyaar in dock over embezzlement

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The alleged discrepancy came to light when a manager discovered documents which revealed that the accused deposited the cheque collected in his personal account.

A former collector at real estate company Deyaar allegedly abused his post and embezzled a cheque worth Dh173000 a court heard. The 38-year-old Jordanian allegedly abused the power he was given in 2006 by the real estate developer to encash the cheque due from a client as part of payment installments for a flat.

The defendant has been charged in the Court of First Instance with embezzlement of public funds.

The alleged embezzlement took place between August and October 2006. An Egyptian legal manager at Deyaar said the defendant’s duties were to receive and collect payments in cash and cheques for real estate units that had been purchased and give clients receipts of payments.

The alleged discrepancy came to light when the manager discovered documents which revealed that the accused deposited the cheque in his personal account — and withdrew the money later — instead of doing so in Deyaar’s revenues. The witness said the accused left the job without prior notice after this.

“A report was filed to the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigner Affairs on September 12 2006 that the accused left his job.”

The accused reportedly admitted later in a phone call while he was in Jordan that he embezzled the cheque and vowed to pay it back.

In August this year his sister settled the embezzled amount and in return Deyaar gave her a clearance document the witness said in his statement to the prosecution. -marykhaleejtimes.com
