Australia Passes Foreign Fighters Bill
(MENAFN- QNA) Australian senate Thursday passed Foreign Fighters Bill that bans citizens from participating in foreign conflicts.
The law, passed with support of Labor party, will enable the government to cancel passport of violators. It also empowers state authorities to declare international conflict areas as 'no travel zones' for Australians.
The legislation comes after the United Nations last month urged states to make participation of its citizens in foreign conflicts to support militant groups a criminal offence.
Prime Minister Tony Abbott told the Australian Parliament at least 70 Australians were fighting in Iraq and Syria backed by about 100 Australia-based "facilitators". The government has cancelled passports of 70 Australians, he said.
The government has plans to introduce new legislation allowing allow closer cooperation between Australian intelligence wing and the Defence Force.
