Sales of footwear were heavily impacted by economic uncertainty at the end of the review period with many consumers seeking to save money wherever possible due to declining disposable income levels. Instability and 1900hrs curfews also hit sales hard in the year particularly as Friday evenings are traditionally a peak shopping time. Footwear also faced strong competition from informal retail channels and counterfeits at the end of the review period as consumers sought to save money. As a result of these trends overall footwear saw 13% volume sales decline and 6% current value decline in 2013 over the previous year.

Competitive Landscape

Like most product areas in apparel and footwear footwear is highly fragmented. There are many small producers in this area and a large number of imported brands present in the country with "others" accounting for almost 83% value share in 2013 as a result. However "others" lost over a percentage point in value share in 2013 over the previous year. This was partly due to lower imports as a result of stricter import controls rising import duties and Egypt's instability. In addition some low-cost domestic producers opted to shift into the informal economy as they sought to survive in the face of higher production and distribution costs.

Footwear will continue to face strong competition from informal sales channels in the forecast period with consumers likely to continue to face financial struggles. This competition is expected to mainly impact men's footwear which is expected to see 33% volume sales decline in the forecast period as a result. Men have greater access to informal channels and are more comfortable shopping in these channels than women. In addition many men who want to buy prestigious brands such as adidas Nike and Timberland are expected to opt for counterfeits due to these products' considerably lower prices.
