Spain regrets Israeli approval of building new settlements E. Jerusalem

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Spain expressed regret Tuesday over the Israeli authorities' approval of building 1,000 new housing units in two settlements in East Jerusalem, including plans to execute other building projects in the West Bank.

Those decisions are incompatible with the objective adopted by the government of Israel in formal negotiations with the Palestinians to find a peaceful, comprehensive, and a just solution to their conflict, the Spanish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry explained that Israeli settlements in occupied territories are illegal under international law, stressing that it is affecting the geographic existence of the Palestinian state, and forms an obstacle to achieving peace on the basis of two states solution.

Approximately 500,000 Israelis live in settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, where nearly 2.4 million Palestinians live, despite the fact that the International Court considers those settlements as illegal.
