Giant leap towards robotic revolution at Hindustan University

October 28 2014 Chennai: Hindustan University takes a giant leap towards the Robotic Revolution in association with Yaskawa India. The University adds another feather in its cap with the inauguration of a state-of-the art Automation and Robotics lab by Mr. Akinori Urakawa President & CEO Yaskawa India on 20th October 2014.

Speaking on the occasion he stressed the need for automation and robotics in industries and to be prepared to exploit such technologies. Dr. D. Dinakaran Professor & group lead briefed about the centre of automation and robotics and the courses offered by the Centre. Dr. Mrs. Elizabeth Verghese congratulated the faculty members for having created a world class infrastructure for teaching the subject and hoped that the new facility now created would further open up opportunities to meet the growing enthusiasm of students on the subject.

Mr. Kenchi Imamura Head (Operation) Yaskawa India launched the website and the training courses on automation and robotics. He reiterated that the training programmes would fully equip the young scientists to design their future. Mr. Ashok Verghese Director talking about the lab said that the automation and robotics lab aims at imparting intensive training to enhance the creative skills of the students and also enable their inquisitive minds to understand the nuances of science and technology in a better way. Dr. B. Venkataraman Dean – Mechanical sciences proposed a vote of thanks.

Aimed at encouraging creativity and innovation among students a ‘Robotics lab’ is set up at Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science. In what seems to be first of its kind initiative the University plans to tie up with YASKAWA the world’s largest manufacturer of motion control products for industrial automation and robotics to harness the intellectual energy of academia to impact Indian industries.

A recent study shows that one million industrial robots currently in operation have been directly responsible for the creation of close to three million jobs. Robotics will be a major driver for global job creation over the next five years. A growth in robot use will result in the creation of one million high quality jobs around the world. Hindustan University by setting up an automation and robotics lab helps in educating the future work force in meeting the oncoming technical challenges and advancements in the field of automation and robotics.

The lab will act as a platform for research innovation and development in the field of robotics automation and computer vision. The facilities available in the lab includes: Three industrial robots vision systems applications for material handling deburring drilling palletizing sensors data acquisition systems robot path simulation software work cell simulation facility LabVIEW Matlab Adams – Multi body dynamics and other application systems for advanced research and training. It is also planned to augment the above facilities with CNC and advanced condition monitoring systems. The bright generous space in the lab will act as a test bed for students to experiment their promising innovations.
