Burger King registered the largest increase in value share over the last two years of the review period mostly due to new store openings. The US giant within burger fast food was acquired by the Brazilian private equity group 3G Capital Management in 2010 which is the same owner of Anheuser-Busch InBev. Since then it has invested significant resources in order to increase its share through outlet expansion mainly in retail locations and cities where the chain was not yet present.

Competitive Landscape

McDonald's led sales of chained fast food with a 32% value share in 2013. This was despite a decline of one percentage point in its value share due to the rising presence of its competitors mainly Burger King and Subway (Doctor’s Associates). Despite this the chain increased its number of outlets from 731 stores in 2012 to 816 in 2013.

Industry Prospects

Fast food is expected to grow by 46% at constant 2013 prices over the forecast period as a whole. This will be mostly due to the expansion of the three largest categories of other fast food bakery products fast food and burger fast food.
