Nationwide - (2014-2015) – “Love is the New Hate” says author activist Jessica Holter who celebrates 20 years as the creative genius behind the controversial Punany Project a multimedia fascination that first caught the World’s attention with an audacious HBO Real Sex feature. Today she prepares for her anniversary tour of ABC’s of Love for Valentine’s Season 2015 which will land in 8 cities (Sacramento San Francisco Chicago Detroit New Orleans Dallas New York and Miami) with Holter in the lead role. Often imitated never duplicated… Jessica Holter started the first Black Sexual Revolution with the HBO Real Sex 24 feature on her budding theater company The Punany Poets in the year 2000. With the cable feature and her first published book Punany: The Hip Hop Psalms Holter created a necessary open dialogue about sex at a time when HIV was fast becoming a bi-product of prison poverty and misogyny in rap music and pop-culture.
“At first people were shocked” Holter says of her televised world. “People who watched Real Sex were used to seeing White liberals on the show. Seeing Black people talking and thinking about sex caught people by surprise. Perhaps some believed Black people did not actually think about sex… we just do it like animals. But I put sex and poetry together on an international stage and ready or not Punany was born! I had a mission. I wanted to promote safer sex and awaken African Americans to the reality of AIDS among heterosexuals. People use sex to sell everything else why not use sex to sell safe sex?”

As viewers watched The Punany Poets’ historically televised 11 minutes of unabashed unapologetically raw erotic sketches the future of spoken word was shaped. In spite of Holter’s underlying AIDS awareness and sexual health message The Punany Poets’ display of unashamed Black sexuality was initially criticized banned and even protested by African American colleges and student unions thwarting the writer’s plans for a college tour. But today both Holter and the idea of “the erotic poet” is celebrated and her Punany showcase is mimicked on stages all over the world.
Holter remains the pioneer of commercial poetry. Her cutting-edge productions have raised the bar on the complexity and expectation of spoken word performance. With tickets ranging from $37.50 General Admission and $125 VIP Punany performances rival some Broadway productions without the Broadway machine.
It is no wonder that this prodigal daughter of the Baptist church says God has gifted her with her mission since she believes she was called to preach and derailed from that plan at 15 when she was raped. Holter who has formal public speaking training and experience by way of Toastmaster’s International Christian Evangelism and the MLK Jr. Forensic Society at Howard University is anointed of tongue and gifted of pen. Her voice itself is a brand of its own rising and falling with a gospel-like cadence reminiscent of great ministers.
Her passion and dedication to The Punany Project has evolved into a movement for healthy sexuality and communicable love. With the support of her loyal fan base Holter has built respected organization with a growing catalog of musical recordings books visual art DVD's branded merchandise and Sex Education Theater.
