World capitals welcome Tunisia elections


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Monday congratulated Tunisia on the success of the legislative elections held yesterday.

Secretary General of the Jeddah-based Organization Iyad Ameen Madani said in a statement the polls were held in free, credible and peaceful atmospheres with the involvement of the broad political spectrum.

"The elections met the international-recognized standards and in the framework of transparency, political pluralism and peaceful power transfer," he affirmed.

Madani voiced confidence that the Tunisian people will pursue the process of reconstruction the constitutional institutions which will culminate in the election of a head of state within the set time schedule, thus opening new horizons for development and prosperity.

In Doha the State of Qatar lauded the parliamentary elections as "historic step towards democratization." The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the Tunisian people were able to advance the process of peaceful transition towards democracy and rebuilding the state institutions thanks to their wisdom and awareness.

"The main mission for the Tunisians now is to protect the nascent pluralist system and achievements of the revolution," it stressed.

"Qatar hopes that the outcomes of the polls will contribute to the strengthening of the national unity, stability and security of Tunisia and the fulfilment of the aspirations of the Tunisian people," the statement added.

The Algerian government welcomed the peaceful elections and renewed commitment to full support to neighborly Tunisia in its march towards democracy and stability.

The elections represent the start of a new crucial stage on the track towards rebuilding the democratic institutions and the state of law, Spokesman of the Algerian Foreign Minister Abdulaziz Al-Charif said.

"The peaceful and successful elections came as a result of the political awareness and wisdom of the Tunisian people," the spokesman added.

Meanwhile, the French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said the Tunisians have achieved "a historic milestone" in confirming their attachment to democracy.

"The Tunisians have proved that democracy is possible in all the continents and in all cultures," Tunisia News Agency (TAP) quoted Fabius as saying in a statement posted on the French Embassy's official website.

"Nearly four years after the Tunisian Revolution, Tunisians went to the polling stations for a decisive elections that ushers in the establishment of sustainable and democratic institutions of the second Tunisian Republic. France is delighted," Fabius added.

In Madrid the Spanish Foreign Ministry commended the peaceful and orderly conduct of the polls, saying the process represents a crucial step on the road of political transition that shows Tunisia's firm commitment to democratization.

The Ministry congratulated, in a brief statement, the winning candidates and voice hope for closer cooperation with friendly Tunisia in fulfilling its socio-economic development and prosperity.

Similarly, the Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said "the exemplary" conduct of the legislative elections in Tunisia is a "sign of hope and confidence that extends to the entire Mediterranean." Renzi welcomed the democratic spirit that prevailed throughout the election day, adding that Italy has followed these elections with a deepest sympathy, according to a statement on the website of the Italian Embassy in Tunis.

After the adoption of the new Constitution at the beginning of this year, the Tunisians have shown once again their will to determine their own destiny, he stressed.
