Jordan- King Abdullah II meets outgoing EU foreign policy chief Ashton

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) King Abdullah II pledged Jordan's commitment to the EU's efforts which aim to achieve peace and security in the region during a meeting with its outgoing foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton on Sunday.

According to a Royal Court statement, he also said he appreciates the role practiced by Ashton, during her five-year tenure, in boosting relations to an advanced level between the two sides on a number of issues.

The talks highlighted regional matters, including the impacts of the Syrian crisis on neighbouring countries, during which King Abdullah reiterated Jordan's support of a political solution there that safeguards the unity of land and people.

On Iraq, he also reiterated Jordan's stance in support of Iraqis in their fight on the threat of terrorism, and efforts to unite them in their efforts to build their future.

The talks also discussed peace efforts in the Middle East based on the two-state solution, aiming for the final solution of Palestinian statehood.

For her part, Ashton expressed appreciation of Jordan's coordinative stance with the EU and the King's wise role in handling Middle East affairs.

Later, she met Jordan's Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh, and held talks which focused on the EU's support of Jordan amid the burden it carries in hosting the large influx of refugees from Syria fleeing the violence in their country.

Foreign Minister Judeh expressed his country's appreciation of EU support on this matter.
