Obama congratulates Tunisia on electing new parliament

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) US President Barack Obama congratulated Sunday the people of Tunisia on the democratic election of a new parliament, describing it "an important milestone" in Tunisia's historic political transition.

By casting their ballots, Obama said in a press statement, Tunisians "continued to inspire people across their region and around the world, as they did during Tunisia's 2011 revolution and with the adoption of a new constitution earlier this year.

"Tunisia's example remind us all that dialogue, consensus-building, political pluralist and peaceful assembly help from the bedrock of democracy," he added.

Obama reaffirmed the US commitment to support democracy in Tunisia, as well as "our continued friendship with their people and to partner with the next government as it works to promote economic opportunity, protect freedom, and ensure security for all Tunisians."
