UAE- Happy New Year: The much awaited Diwali blockbuster

It’s the movie we have all been waiting for. And no it’s not ‘just another typical’ Bollywood film - despite the irony of a movie set in New Year releasing during Diwali. If there is one thing we have learnt over the years from a Shah Rukh Khan starrer it is this – the movie is bound to be entertaining. Mix in the talented Ms Padukone the over-the-top Farah Khan and the rest of the cast and we for one are sure we are in for an entertaining ride this Diwali. Here we bring you five reasons why Happy New Year is bound to do well. And yes the magic of Shah Rukh Khan is just one of them.

The Dubai Connection

We loved watching Tom Cruise scale up the Burj Dubai in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. Or Anil Kapoor pretend the fabulous Zabeel Saray was his opulent residence in the same film. Many movies have been set in Dubai since then but not in the scale of Happy New Year. The Atlantis may have got off to a fantastic start in Dubai back in 2008 with a record setting firework display but there is no doubt the SRK-Deepika starrer is going to take this to another level all together. If Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara doubled the number of Indian tourists travelling to Spain we shudder to think what the release of HNY would do to the traffic at the Palm. But admittedly the charm of watching your home city light up the big screen is something else.

The SRK-Deepika Magic

Their sparkling chemistry in the Rohit Shetty directed Chennai Express in 2013 set the screen ablaze. Shah Rukh Khan is one actor who gives his actresses enough screen time to shine and Deepika is undoubtedly one heroine who can hold her own in any movie. Their on-screen magic was evident from their very first outing – Om Shanti Om – and we are no doubt in for a repeat performance this Thursday when the movie opens in the UAE.

Heist Drama

Bollywood hasn’t done much of it for sure with a few exceptions here and there.

Farah Khan’s Tees Maar Khan is the last one which comes to mind though as SRK himself was quoted as saying on a television show if Happy New Year can revive anyone’s career it is that of Farah who needs a hit desperately after the debacle of her Akshay Kumar starrer. All tongue in cheek of course. At least we think so.

But the whole bank heist a la Ocean’s Eleven treated with a heavy dose of Bollywood is undoubtedly one of the biggest draws of this year.

Boman Irani

Can any movie starring this multi-faceted actor be anything other than entertaining Over the years we have seen him holding his own whether playing the villain a comic character or the hero’s side-kick. The lovable Parsi who tried his hand in the hospitality industry then moved on to photography before embarking on a Bollywood career is an actor par excellence. And we dare anyone to contradict that. Just check out his career graph in which he has played the grumpy Dr Asthana in Munna Bhai MBBS or the stern college professor who lives by the book Viru Sahastrabuddhe in 3 Idiots or the two-timing don Vardhan in Don 2 with great élan. Having caught a glimpse of him in the trailer we can’t wait for the laughs to begin.

Dance off

Nobody loves a dance off better than us. And when you have a motley crew consisting of Vivaan Shah (remember him in 7 Khoon Maaf) Sonu Sood (a la Salman with his muscular body on display) Abhishek Bachchan (who is yet to get his due in the industry) the affable Boman Irani and of course the inimitable SRK and Deepika there can be no doubt it is going to be one hell of a dance show.

Bollywood has a few dance movies to its credit no doubt – cue Dil To Paagal Hai (1997) Rab Ne Bana De Jodi (2008) and Chance Pe Dance (2010). But the story of a group of losers who enter a dance competition ostensibly to rob a bank is a novel approach that Farah Khan we are sure will do full justice to.
