Mohammed Khamis powers UAE with golden lift

Dubai: The UAE continued to prosper as the physically challenged Emirati athletes won more medals including a gold on the sixth day of the week long second Asian Para Games in Incheon South Korea which ends on Friday.



The UAE now have 25 medals including four gold 12 silver and 9 bronze. Veteran powerlifter Mohammed Khamis won gold with stupendous lifts which led to a grand 230kg total midway through the competition to be a clear winner.



Now Dubai-based Khamis won gold to be the first UAE Paralympian to win the honour in the Games at the 2004 Paralympics in the 217kg category.



Also claiming medals early on Thursday were Mohammed Kaabi (silver in discus for men) Mohammed Mesbahi (silver in a javelin category) and the versatile thrower Mary Matrooshi (silver in a women’s division shot put event) — her third medal after their silver and bronze efforts on Tuesday and Wednesday.



Abdullah Sultan Al Aryani snatched the silver in his archery category while in 50-metre rifle 3-way shooting Abdulla Saif Al Aryani came sixth on Thursday.



Haifa Naqbi won bronze in the 52kg weight open category powerlifting to round up a successful outing for the UAE contingent on Day 6. Khamis said: “We will not fall short of the expectations of our supporters the wise leaders of the nation and of the promises we made before leaving the shores of the UAE.”



Powerlifting coach Tito Qasim said: “Mohammed Khamis is an example to follow by our youth and the citizens of the UAE. He never lets anything to come in his way while training and when competing. He has maintained his ‘Golden Boy’ status in style here in Incheon.” Meanwhile on Wednesday Qaid Ahdian won a grand double gold in the team and individual 50m rifle events to propel the UAE to an 18-medal tally - 3 gold and 8 silver and 7 bronze.



“I dedicate the shooting team’s efforts to the wise leadership of our country after our golden run in the rifle shooting events” said Ahdian. In the team event the UAE edged the South Koreans and the Thais into the second and third spots.



Mohammed Qaid won the men’s 100 metres wheelchair sprint on Tuesday to give the UAE their first gold of the meet.



Mary won bronze in a women’s discus category her second medal after the silver in javelin on Wednesday and A. Rashidi won bronze in a men’s category javelin with a national record.
