(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The ghost of crib deaths returned to haunt West Bengal with 11 infants losing their lives at the Malda Medical College and Hospital in the past three days, an official said yesterday.
Confirming the deaths, medical superintendent and vice principal M A Rashid said all the infants were underweight and suffered from respiratory problems.
The state-run hospital has frequently witnessed infant deaths in the recent past. Earlier in July, over a dozen babies died, while in June at least 19 infants died of encephalitis. In January, over a dozen crib deaths occurred.
Firecracker shop fire kills seven
Jaipur: At least seven people were killed early yesterday in a fire at a firecracker shop in Rajasthan's Barmer district, police said. The incident took place around 1 am at the shop in Balotra area of the district, over 430km from the state capital Jaipur.
"We have so far recovered seven bodies from the shop while rescue operation is still on," Barmer Superintendent of Police Hemant Sharma said on phone. "It seems that these seven people were trapped inside the shop when the fire broke out," Sharma said. "The fire has been extinguished and we have started investigations into its cause," he added.
Premier greets nation on Diwali
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday greeted the nation on the occasion of Diwali and hoped "the lamp of prosperity be lit among the poor".
In a message posted on Facebook, Modi said: "Wishing all of you a very Happy Diwali. May our lives be illuminated with joy and peace. May the lamp of prosperity be lit among the poor."
Prime Minister greeted President Pranab Mukherjee on the occasion of Diwali from the icy heights of Siachen Glacier.
"Wished President Pranab Mukherjee a very Happy Diwali from Siachen!" Modi said in a tweet. "Am sure this would be among the most unique greetings Pranabda received."
