Schulz calls for comprehensive EU strategy against terrorism

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA))  The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, voiced great concern over the issue of foreign fighters in Syria and Iraq on Thursday.

Speaking at a summit of EU leaders, he said, "the European Parliament shares your grave concerns about foreign fighters, namely the EU citizens who are radicalised here in Europe and then make their way to Syria and Iraq." "Today there are more than 3,000 European fighters in Iraq and Syria. Men and women, and even boys and girls, from every walk of life are leaving Europe to join the war," he said.

"These terrorists are fuelling the conflicts in countries which are all too close to the European Union. They also pose a security risk to European countries," said Schulz.

"We must stand united and fearless in the face of such violent fanaticism. We need a comprehensive strategy that starts with measures to prevent radicalisation and embraces close cooperation between law enforcement agencies and intelligence services," he added.

On Ebola, he said we must do more to help the west African countries affected by the Ebola outbreak to fight the disease.

"And we must do so quickly, in order to finally curb the spread of the epidemic, and in order to protect people in Europe," he said.

EU leaders began here this evening a two-day summit which is focused on climate change and the economic situation in Europe as well as some foreign policy issues.
