Qatar- Deals with Turkey agencies to educate Syrian refugees


(MENAFN- The Peninsula) H H Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson, Education Above All, yesterday witnessed the signing of two memorandums of understanding between EAA and two Turkish development and humanitarian agencies.

EAA signed deals with Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency in the field of education in West Africa and Afghanistan and with Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency on primary education for Syrian refugees in Turkey.

She was joined by Deputy Prime Minister, Numan Kurtulmus.

The agreements follow her visits to two camps in southern Turkey housing over 16,000 refugees. She met children, parents and teachers and pledged support through EAA's Educate A Child programme to ensure quality education for children.

EAA and Educate A Child programme will work with both agencies to enrol and retain out-of-school children by provide quality basic education.

She also visited the new Ottoman Archives Centre in Instabul and viewed historical documents relating to Turkey's relations with the Arab world.

The visit bolstered partnership between the centre and Qatar Foundation which since 2011 has seen many Ottoman documents relating to Qatar digitised and translated into English and Arabic.

The collaboration will see further digitisation of documents and research by Qatari and Turkish scholars.

Sheikha Moza expressed delight in visiting the centre and stressed the importance of strengthening cultural ties between both countries through continued translation and digitisation of historical Arab documents which play an essential role in enriching the understanding of the Gulf's heritage and preserving its Islamic values and culture.

The centre has documents from 42 nations which were related to the Ottoman Empire.

The number of documents relating to the Arab world is estimated between 80 million and 100 million, of which only 50,000 have been translated so far. There are also over 130 newspapers and magazines in languages, including Arabic, Hebrew, Serbian, German and Russian.

Sheikha Moza was hosted by the Deputy Prime Minister of Turkey, Numan Kurtulmus, and the Director of Ottoman Archives, Ugur Unal.
