Oman Sail team finishes third in Sailing Champions League


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Oman Sail finished a creditable third in the inaugural Sailing Champions League in Copenhagen Denmark on Sunday.

Copenhagen-based Kongelig Dansk Yachtklub (KDY) won the title while Circolo Canottiere Aniene of Italy finished second in the Kick-off Regatta that had 23 clubs from 14 nations competing from October 17-19.

The Oman Sail crew comprised skipper Robert Greenhalgh Phil Robertson and two Omani sailors in Nasser al Mashari and Ali al Balushi. Taking part in one-design J/70s the eventual champion won by a slender 0.5-point margin with the top three teams fighting it out in a direct encounter.

At the end KDY with helmsman Michael Hestbk (participant at the 2012 London Olympics) Joachim Aschenbrenner Lucas Lier and Frederik Berg prevailed with 92.83 points in a total of 45 races that were held in three days.

The Italian club scored 92.33 points while Oman Sail garnered 89.83 points with four race wins. Rome-based Circolo Canottiere Aniene which had a strong team at the start line featuring helmsman Lorenzo Bressani offshore world champions Matteo Mason and Samuele Nicolettis and Michele Paoletti also won six races.

Among the 92 sailors were several prominent Olympians and over 22 medallists at world championships and Volvo Ocean Race winners.
