(MENAFN- Arab News) The Saudi Railways Organization (SRO) has signed a SR47.19 million contract with a national company with the aim to control traffic on both sides of the railway line through a fiber optic network project (first stage).

The project will cover the full railway line network with a total length of more than 1000 km the Saudi Press Agency said.

Following the signing ceremony at the SRO headquarters in Dammam SRO President Mohamed Khalid Al-Suwaiket stated that the project is the first of its kind in the Middle East and includes procurement installation training and operation and maintenance for a five-year period.

The project is also aimed to upgrade safety levels and enhance efficiency of the railway network by adopting the latest safety standards as well as to minimize irregular encroachments on the boundaries of the railway lines and coordinate mobility on both sides he said.

He added that the project will allow the SRO to adopt and use modern technologies in detection and control works through vibration mechanisms detected by fiber optic cables which will be sent to central processing units (CPUs) to determine the types of vibration compared to the information stored in the data base to identify whether the vibrations are originating from vehicles earth-moving works or human footsteps.

He said the project would include the installation of 34 branch processing units along the railway line in addition to two major processing units in Riyadh and Dammam.
