Jailed expat in Oman asked to pay RO9,000 as compensation after freak accident


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) An Indian expatriate employed with a car cleaning facility has been jailed following a freak mishap that cost his Bangladeshi colleague a limb and damaged three expensive cars. 

Majid Ali Syed (26) a supervisor with a contracting company has been asked to pay damages of nearly RO9000 to his colleague and owners of the vehicles.

Social workers have appealed to the public to help him raise the amount. The incident took place a few months ago. As the regular driver was not present Syed himself was moving the cleaned cars and lost control of one while driving it towards the designated area.

The car hit his colleague Oziullah Rafiqullah before ramming into three other vehicles. Rafiqullah suffered serious inuries and his left leg had to be amputated.

Syed does not have a driving licence P M Jabir community welfare secretary of the Indian Social Club said.

'Because of which he is liable to pay compensation to Rafiqullah and owner's of the vehicle. Syed had come to Oman just five months before the accident. He will not be released until he pays the damages. The Indian mission is not in a position to help him' Jabir added.

Syed will have to arrange for the money he needs to pay Rafiqullah and owners of the vehicles. Efforts are on to arrive at a settlement Jabir said.
