UAE- PCB need to back the captain for stability sake says Mahmood

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The PCB needs to streamline the things which may help to improve the performance of the team says Azhar reiterated.

Dubai — Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) need to back their captain for the sake of stability according to Azhar Mahmood who is in Dubai to arrange a Twenty20 camp at the ICC Cricket Academy.

“The PCB needs to back their captain to bring some sort of stability in the team. If they nominate Misbah-ul-Haq as captain then they should stick with him” opined the former Pakistani all rounder.

“If someone criticises Misbah and claims that he deserves to be the captain he should be told plainly that it is not the right way” he said in an obvious reference to Shahid Afridi’s recent uttenrances where he asked PCB to decide once and for all on the ODI captaincy.

“The PCB needs to streamline the things which may help to improve the performance of the team” Azhar reiterated.

Azhar has played cricket in all parts of the world and he still cherishes his stint with Pakistan team. The Rawalpindi-born all rounder now lives in United Kingdom and plays for Surrey county. He wants to remain involved with the game in any possible capacity. He is ready to help improve the standards of the game in his home country.

While talking to Khaleej Times about Pakistan cricket he said: “It really hurts when I see Pakistan cricket going through such phase.

“How can you change a captain in the middle of the series” he questioned.

Giving example of how the governing body should stick with the captain he said: “There was a lot of criticism against Alastair Cook but he got the board’s backing and he is still the captain of England. Michael Clarke and MS Dhoni have been leading their teams for quite some time.”

On the recent decline in Pakistan cricket’s fortunes he expressed his worry about the batting. “They need to select a group of players and stick with them. Since domestic cricket is in shambles it is hard to find a quality batsman” he reckons.

“In our time there were many top performers who failed to break into national team because of tough competition.

“The responsibility lies with the PCB to inject life into the domestic cricket. It needs to infuse some money into the system because the boys at domestic level really face financial problems.”

There is no international cricket in Pakistan due to security reasons and the game has suffered a lot. But Azhar does agree with the idea by saying: “No doubt there is no cricket in Pakistan and our youth can not see their heroes performing in front of their eyes.”

“But TV has made it possible for everyone to be part of the game. If a cricket match is played in the UAE you can watch in Lahore or Mumbai. It should not be an excuse that lack of live cricket is damaging the game in Pakistan” Azhar said.

While talking about Pakistan’s chances in World Cup Azhar said: “Keeping in mind Pakistan’s recent performances it will not be easy for Pakistan in the mega event.

“But at the same time it can go in Pakistan’s favour as they will be underdogs. I hope they will put up a better show in Australia and New Zealand next year.

“I am ready to help the team in any capacity. I have already contacted the PCB in this regard and I will be more than happy to contribute in Pakistan’s success.”
