Hollande underlines importance of talks between Mali gov't, armed groups


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) French President Francois Hollande Saturday underscored importance of negotiations taking place in Algeria between representatives of the Mali government and armed groups, aimed at reaching an agreement respecting unity and sovereignty of Mali.

Hollande expressed in a phone call with Mali's President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita his support for negotiations to reach an agreement, the President's office said in a statement.

He hoped the agreement would allow the Mali government take full control of territories, facilitate reconciliation within a united and secular country.

Hollande, said the statement, expressed France's commitment to supporting development in Mali.

Mali's foreign minister is negotiating with leaders of six armed groups means of reaching peace in the north of the country.
