Egypt dismantles eight terrorist cells with 52 members

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Egypt's security authorities dismantled eight terrorist cells in six governorates in the country, arresting 52 members and seizing their arms, explosives, and large sums of money, Interior Ministry announced Saturday.

The terrorist cells' members were arrested in Giza, Minya, Daqahliya, Alexandria, Fayoum and Sharqiya governorates, Ministry spokesman Hani Abdulateef said in a press statement, noting that this falls within the ministry's efforts in countering Muslim Brotherhood's members and thwarting their plans to terrorize the people, destroy Egypt's infrastructure and economy.

They targeted vital public facilities, including electricity stations and grids, railways, public transportation, and water, Abdulateef said, adding that the terrorist cells also targeted citizens' safety and security by planting IEDs in public gatherings.

Some of the arrested confessed of planning and preparing for a number of attacks, he said, noting that they have also guided security forces to some of their hideouts, where they hid explosive materials, arms, and anti-government brochures.

The spokesman also mentioned that security authorities have delivered a "devastating blow" to the terrorist cell in Alexandria, which intended to delay start of schools and spread chaos among students, adding that security forces, as a result, seized a large collection of leaflets designed to recruit new members to the terrorist cell.
