(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The British Government on Saturday welcomed the Iraqi government's vital appointment of new Interior and Defence Ministers.
Mohammad Al-Ghabban, a Shiite lawmaker, was appointed Minister of Interior, while Sunni, Khaled Al-Obeidi, took Defense Minister, in a decision approved both by Prime Minister Haidar Al-Abadi and the parliament earlier in the day.
The move was seen vital to the country's efforts to unify ethnic groups in the mission to defeat the jihadist group, Islamic State, formerly known as ISIL.
Following the announcement, British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said, "I welcome the appointment in Iraq of new Interior and Defence Ministers as well as the appointment of Kurdish ministers to key posts in the new Iraqi government.
"The completion of a unity government is a crucial milestone on the way to addressing the serious security, political and humanitarian challenges facing Iraq.
"It is now vital that all political parties work together to overcome those challenges, including the threat posed by the criminal and terrorist activities of the self-proclaimed Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL)."
