The initiating session took time to recognise the altruistic work of the late Shaikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Mr. Gurg spoke about education as a vital right of children and the life-altering impact it can have on the mind of a refugee child.

Mr. Al Gurg specifically noted the role of restoring education infrastructure in Gaza and the need to provide social and psychological support that children in post-conflict zones require to be able to reintegrate into society along with resources and trainings for teachers.

Noura Noman Director-General of the Executive Office of Shaikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi briefly related a touching story of a visit to the Syrian refugee camp sponsored by the UAE in Jordan. It was there that she met a young girl named Kitabah which means “writer” in Arabic. Noman referred to how easy it is to begin to see refugee children as simply facts and figures but the experience of speaking with Kitabah serves as a constant reminder that each refugee child is a unique individual with dreams talents and goals.
