Dubai on track with Expo 2020 plans


(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Dubais plan to host Expo 2020 is well on track with a new Expo 2020 Bureau being established to co-ordinate between national and international stakeholders.

Senior officials from the newly created Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau shared preliminary plans priorities and governance with the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) on Thursday.



Reem Ibrahim Al Hashemi UAE’s Minister of State Managing Director of the Dubai Expo 2020 Higher Committee and Director General of Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau said: “We are pleased to continue to work closely with the BIE and to share with them our plans for the delivery of this momentous event. We are confident these plans will allow us to successfully achieve our vision and goals to produce a meaningful Expo for our country region and global community.”



This was the second of many updates required for the official registration of the first Expo to be staged in the Middle East North Africa and South Asia (MENASA).

The bureau is established under decree 30/2014 by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. It has the mandate to oversee the preparation and delivery of the Expo through coordinating and planning with national and international stakeholders formalising key programming and setting up critical governance structures.



He presented an overview of the Expo 2020 Dubai site’s positioning and legacy highlighting its strategic placement within Dubai and the UAE especially in context of Dubai World Central — the world’s first purpose-built aerotropolis.



Explaining the new bureau’s role Khalifa Al Zaffin Executive Chair-man of Dubai Aviation City Corporation (DACCP) and Member of the Expo 2020 Dubai Higher Committee said: “Delivering a successful and effective World Expo 2020 is a complex operation including creating meaningful content building a highly functional location and involving our global community. The Expo 2020 site is strategically located within Dubai World Central which is the future economic driver of the Emirate of Dubai. It is growing in a strong and sustainable manner in terms of trade logistics and residential interest.”



BIE Secretary General Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales who was joined at the meeting by BIE Executive Committee members added: “Planning an Expo that celebrates a community as well as educates the world on issues that will have significant influence on the future of our global cultures and economies is an enormous undertaking. It is the mission of the BIE to provide continual support for host cities to ensure that the Expo experience is truly unique and strengthens the community.”
