Qatar Reaffirms Commitment to Promote and Protect the Rights of Children


(MENAFN- QNA) The State of Qatar confirmed that it will spare no effort to contribute effectively to support the efforts of the international community in promoting and protecting the rights of children, renewing its commitment to the implementation of all international agreements and conventions relating to this field.

The State of Qatar stressed the importance of giving priority in the development plan for after 2015 to the poorest and most vulnerable children, and that the issue of protecting children from violence will be at the heart of the development plan in order to speed progress towards a world free of violence against children.

This came in the statement of the State of Qatar delivered by Fahd Mohammed Al Khayareen, member of the delegation of the State of Qatar to the United Nations at the General Assembly Third Committee on Item 64: Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Children.

He pointed out that the United Nations reports on the status of the child in the world have shown regrettable facts raising serious concern and confirmed that the dimensions of the phenomenon of violence against children is not diminished, while the risk of violence exists, including in places where children should be safe, such as schools and nursing homes.

He stressed that there is an increase in global child trafficking, where children account for 60 percent of all trafficking victims, noting that despite the severity of these facts and figures, overcoming and avoiding many of these challenges is possible if the political will exists, and concerted and integrated efforts are taken by all segments of society, including families, schools, civil society and governments, which should not be considered only as essential actors but also as factors to help ensuring the success and strengthening efforts for the realization of child rights and his protection of all forms of violence.

The statement reviewed the experience of the State of Qatar and the actions taken in the promotion and respect of human rights, including children, stressing that the promotion and realization of the rights of the child are an absolute priority.

The State of Qatar, represented by its wise leadership, pays special attention to this issue at all local, regional and international levels, said the statement, pointing out that Qatar has ratified the Convention on the rights of the Child, which became part of its national law, and acceded to the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the sale of children, child prostitution and child pornography, and the Optional Protocol on the Involvement of Children in Armed Conflict.
