Interactive Panel in Washington on "Foreign Policy of the State of Qatar"

(MENAFN- QNA) Qatar's Ambassador to the United States, HE Mohammed Jaham Al Kuwari, took part in a dialogue organized by the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) in Washington, titled "Foreign Policy of the State of Qatar."   In his speech, Ambassador Al-Kuwari stressed the need to acknowledge that the situation in the region is still complicated, which drives Qatar to work as a supporter of humanitarian efforts and spread peace, saying that in spite of its small size the State of Qatar enjoys enormous riches orientated within its efforts to fight poverty in the Arab world, an issue which comes on top of its priorities.

Qatar follows an independent policy that would help in preventing the development of differences into conflicts, HE Al-Kuwari said. The Qatari foreign policy is based on preventive diplomacy and conflict resolution when necessary, he explained, referring in this regard to the mediation efforts pursued by Qatar in Lebanon, Libya, Yemen, Djibouti and Sudan .

In this context, HE Al-Kuwari pointed out to Qatar's mediation efforts in countries with different levels of conflict, such as its mediating role in the release of the nuns kidnapped in Syria's Maaloula.

He also reviewed Qatar's membership in a number of regional organizations, such as the Arab League and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), stressing that through its membership in the GCC, in particular, the State of Qatar seeks to emphasize the common interests between the six GCC countries.

Qatar considers that the GCC would enhance the unity of Arab nationalism, HE Al-Kuwari said, adding that there have been points of controversy in many situations , which have been always resolved through consensus.

Qatar is keen to promote a culture of dialogue between the GCC countries to avoid any misunderstanding, he went on saying.

Through the Arab League, Qatar seek to strengthen the responsibility of Arab governments to protect their citizens and promote human rights, education, and sustainable development, HE Al-Kuwari said.

In case of violation of that responsibility towards the citizens, Qatar stands beside people when regimes use violence, which took place in a number of Arab countries, he said, stressing Qatar's keenness on keeping the channels of communication open for dialogue with the political movements committed to human rights, democracy, freedom of expression, human development, the empowerment of women and the fight against illiteracy.

On the regional developments, Ambassador Al-Kuwari stressed the importance of the Islamic parties with historical credibility, which are to a large extent similar to the Christian Democratic parties in Europe, underlining the importance of these legitimate Islamic parties as a force to confront the abuses practiced by terrorist groups.

The absence of legitimate Islamic parties, whose leaders were in prison or exile, has created a political vacuum allowing the rise of groups such as "Daesh." Concluding, HE Al-Kuwari reaffirmed Qatar's keenness to continue playing its mediation role and provide any possible support.
