Qatar- Al Sadd bounce back to overcome spirited Al Ahli

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Al Sadd overcame a first half deficit to consolidate their top position on the Qatar Stars League points table with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the spirited Al Ahli side, yesterday at the Al Ahli Stadium.

As expected, the home side gave the leaders a run for their money, taking the lead in the final stages of the first half before the 'Wolves' rejuvenated in the second half.

The match started with a good pace with both the sides seeking an early lead. Al Sadd got a golden chance to secure lead when they were handed a 15th minute penalty. But, Khalfan Ibrahim failed to beat Al Ahli's goal-keeper Amer Abdulla Dosari who read the star striker's mind well and dived the right to block the attempt.

Spurred with the save, Al Ahli gained momentum and started attacking their oppositions' defense and managed to take the lead through Alain Dioko who struck two minutes before the breather.

Al Sadd returned in the final session as an improved side and wasted not much time in leveling the score with Hasan Khalid Haydos finding the net in the third minute of the second half. The leaders continued to dominate the session and found their winning goal through Hamza Sanhaji, in the 79th minute of the match.

With the victory, unbeaten Al Sadd accumulated a total of 19 points from six wins and a draw from seven matches. They are followed by defending champions Lekhwiya (15 points from six matches).

Meanwhile, Al Arabi also fought back in the second to prevail over Al Wakra 4-2 at their home turf. Al Wakra were leading 2-1 in the first half. Paulo Sergio was the star for the winning side scoring a brace with goals in the 21 and 80th minute of the clash. Imoh Ezekiel (49) and Mussa Albaraka (77) were the other goal scorers for Al Arabi.

For Al Wakra, Mohsine Moutaovali was the only scorer, striking both his goals in the first half (7, 19). Meanwhile, Al Khor and Al Gharafa played an exciting 1-1 draw to share a point each. Al Khor took the lead through Madson Formagini which was leveled by Louise Anderson Nene on a penalty in first minute of injury time.
