Jim Lanning Director of Acquisitions and Logistics at International Relief and Development (IRD) will lead a team that will distribute One World Futball soccer balls and TOMS Shoes at a Cambodian primary school and orphanage October 22 and 23.

IRD is implementing a US Department of Agriculture Food for Education project to address literacy school attendance nutrition hygiene and administration in 132 schools with 31000 students 1000 teachers and 132 school support committees. The program is benefitting more thatn 10000 families in Kampong Chhnang.

Access to sports equipment and proper footwear are essential elements of effective education as well as health concerns—elements often overlooked in nations in which these needs are readily met. Since April 2013 IRD has distributed more than $2 million of shoes sports equipment and health supplies to Cambodian schools and orphanages.

“Proper footwear and sports equipment make a huge difference in the lives of Cambodian schoolchildren” said Lanning. “Shoes reduce the incidence of injury and illness and therefore increase school attendance. Soccer balls encourage the physical activity research shows is necessary for social and physical development.”

Lanning and others will visit the Prolay Meas primary school in Kg Leng District where TOMS Shoes will be given on October 22. The activity will include a discussion about the importance of proper footwear to student health and safety.

Lanning will meet children October 23 at orphanages in Kg Chhnang Ville. In addition to giving TOMS Shoes and providing children with information on footwear Lanning and others will distribute soccer balls provided by One World Futball. The soccer balls are virtually indestructible and were specifically designed for use in developing countries.  Millions have been distributed around the world including by IRD.

“TOMS Shoes and One World Futball are making a significant contribution to individual Cambodians’ lives and to the development of their nation” Lanning said. “We look forward to continuing our partnership with both wherever there is a need.”
