A family comedy drama Happy Birthday Sunita written by writer and actress Harvey Virdi and created by Pravesh Kumar and Harvey Virdi is set to take centre stage in Dubai at DUCTAC next month. The play is brought to the UAE by award-winning British theatre company Rifco and Watford Palace Theatre (UK).

Happy Birthday Sunita introduces audiences to British Punjabi family the Johals on the evening of daughter Sunita’s fortieth birthday. As the curries simmer and rotis are smothered in full-fat butter years of family drama bubbling under the surface start to boil over.

Leading the star cast is one of India’s finest actresses Shabana Azmi who plays Tejpal the matriarch of the Johal house. Shabana’s illustrious career spans four decades with multi-awards including five National Film Awards for Best Actress. She has starred in over one hundred films including Mira Nair’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist and Deepa Mehta’s Midnight’s Children. Happy Birthday Sunita will offer the Dubai audience a rare opportunity to watch the screen legend on stage in an intimate venue.

Rifco’s Artistic Director Pravesh Kumar says: “We are thrilled to bring our new comedy play Happy Birthday Sunita to Dubai next month at DUCTAC. The play has sold out all over the UK and the opportunity to take it to a destination like Dubai is one we were very keen to confirm. Happy Birthday Sunita is a heartwarming comedy about a British Punjabi family and I feel will resonate strongly amongst Dubai’s large and growing South Asian and theatre community.”
