Jeddah All Stars win Haj Cup Invitational Final Showdown
(MENAFN- Arab News) In hostile territory again multititled coach Boy Corsega and Marogong Jeddah All Stars Western Union this time did not let victory to slip away beating Riyadh Papparoti Cafe 93-92 in a thrilling final in the Mobily-Globe Haj Cup Invitational Final Showdown before a jampacked crowd at the Juffalli Compound basketball court on Khurais road here.
The victory avenged a 1-point defeat in overtime to the same squad during the Eid Ramadan Sabra Cup two months back in a game where the visiting Corsega team blew a 5-point lead in the last 45 seconds and lost by the slimmest of margins in the extra period.
Corsega who by his own reckoning has won close to 10 regional titles in events held in the Kingdom's major cities of Riyadh Jeddah and Dammam on top of the prestigious TFC Kingdom Cup crown never had such problems in his grudge match with Louie M. Mulles team manager-coach of Papparoti.
Jeddah sat on an 11-point lead 75-64 entering the fourth quarter but the host squad getting a slew of threes from Grazilla and Co. battled back to keep the game close.
Premier point guard Boyet Bautista eager to redeem himself after being largely blamed for the Jeddah defeat in the Sabra Cup due to his bad decisions at end game was the glue that kept Jeddah together.
Papparoti led at 92-91 on free throws by Jojo Custodio with 16 seconds left.
On the next trip Jeddah milked the clock before Grazilla committed his fifth and last foul on Tom Basa from the three-point area time down to 4 seconds.
Basa missed his first throw but made the next two giving Jeddah a 93-92 edge but a tense situation occurred when Grazilla refused to leave the court after Basa took his first free-throw leaving Corsega to demand a technical for the violation but which the referees simply waved off claiming the clock was not running.
On the next play Custodio went for a layup but Jeddah's Mark Elamparo deflected his shot altering the flight of the ball before a jump ball with one hundredth of a second left was called sealing Riyadh's doom and Jeddah's victory.
Jeddah and Riyadh swapped leads at the end of the first two quarters 27-21 to Jeddah and 58-54 to Riyadh.
Marogong All Stars and Papparoti set up the title clash by beating Dammam All Stars represented by combined NPC-ARCC players and Qassim All Stars on the first day of this regional event organized by Mobily Filipino community consultant Rannie Basanta and trumpeted as the best ever in the Kingdom.
Dammam defeated Qassim 110-87 in the game for third place.
Jeddah's Joseph Ubalde (center) Basa (small forward) Boyet Bautista (point guard) and Mursi Akad (shooting guard) and lone Riyadh player Roel Asay (power forward) made up the mythical five selection. MVP honors went to Akad.
Also Mathew Carney of Dammam received the Best in Sportsmanship award while the awards for Best Coach went to Corsega and Best Manager to Seradj Abdulhamid both from Jeddah Western Union team.
