British unemployment rate dips to 6 percent


(MENAFN) Data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) showed that British unemployment rate dropped to 6 percent in the June-August period, Xinhua reported.

There were 1.97 million unemployed people in the three months to August, down 154,000 from the previous quarter and 538,000 less than a year earlier, the figures showed.

The figures marked the lowest level since the year 2008 and were slightly lower than market expectations of 6.1 percent, said the statistics department of the government.

However, claims for unemployment benefit fell by 18,600 to 951,900 in September from the previous month and was down by 394,500 compared with a year earlier, said ONS.
