UAE welcomes UK parliament recognition of Palestine

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday lauded the British Parliament's vote for recognizing an independent Palestinian state.

"The vote is a good initiative that reflects the British people's support for the Palestinian cause and the right step in the right direction towards boosting the opportunities for peace in the Middle East," Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash said in a statement.

The British move reflects an ethical position on the national rights of the Palestinian people, and indicates the human sympathy with and political support for their efforts, the minister said.

The minister emphasized that the vote should urge Israel to abide by the resolutions of the international community for a two-state solution, and to stop settlements in all occupied Palestinian territories.

The UAE minister believed that the vote would contribute to international efforts to achieve a comprehensive and just peace in the Middle East.

British lawmakers voted overwhelmingly Monday in favor of recognizing Palestine as a state alongside Israel.

The none-biding motion was passed by 274 to 12 in favor of recognizing "Palestine as a state alongside Israel." The House of Commons backed the move "as a contribution to securing a negotiated two-state solution."
