Italian, Iranian FMs discuss action against ISIL

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Italian foreign minister Federica Mogherini discussed by phone on Wednesday with Iranian counterpart Mohammad Zarif a number of issues including the role of Iran in the fight against international terrorism, the situation in Syria, and the Iranian nuclear file.

The two officials thrashed the threat ISIL was posing to the region and the need for all efforts to stem the tide of its expansion, said a statement by the Italian foreign ministry.

It added that the two ministers agreed on the validity of seeking a political resolution to the Syrian crisis. They also discussed the possibility that Lebanon might be dragged into turmoil that is currently afflicting Syria and Iraq and the region as a whole.

Both sought the need for a quick selection of a new president in Lebanon as a further step to keep Lebanon from sliding into the quagmire of regional conflicts, said the statement.

Furthermore, the foreign ministry statement indicated that Mogherini stressed to Zarif, whom she met in Rome last month, the imperative that Iran should assume a positive role in bringing stability to the region.
