China urges Britain not to send wrong signals on Hong Kong

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) China on Wednesday again urged Britain to immediately stop interfering in Hong Kong affairs, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

"We have repeatedly stated that Hong Kong's affairs fall within China's internal affairs," Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei was quoted as saying in a press briefing in Beijing.

Hong's remarks were in response to a written statement to the British parliament on recent events in Hong Kong, which was submitted on Monday by Hugo Swire, a minister of state with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the British government.

"No country or individual has a right to interfere in China's internal affairs," Hong said, urging the British side to speak and act cautiously and not send any wrong signals.

Hong Kong, which returned to the Chinese rule from British colonial administration in 1997, has been plunged into political crisis following Beijing's refusal to grant citizens full universal suffrage.

The demonstrators have been occupying downtown streets since late September in protest at a decision on August 31 by China's National People's Congress Standing Committee, which says candidates in the 2017 Chief Executive election must be approved by a pro-Beijing nominating panel.
