UAE Paralympians set for Incheon Games

Dubai: The UAE Paralympics contingent settled into the Games Village on Monday to take part in the Asian Para Games in Incheon from October 18-14.



Some of the early qualification rounds in the multi-disciplinary meet take place earlier. Forty one countries will be on show in Incheon home to the recent 17th Asian Games. The para games for the differently abled athletes in the continent will see over 4500 athletes take part in 23 disciplines.



The UAE contingent of 134 includes 58 participants and the UAE will go into action in athletics powerlifting wheelchair basketball (the side qualified after a bronze medal finish at the recent Arab championships in Dubai) shooting cycling table tennis fencing and archery events according to media coordinator Moataz Bakr.



Thibyan Salem Al Muhairi secretary general of the UAE Disabled Sports Federation greeted the UAE team on arrival in Incheon. The other officials include mission chief and Chairman of the Board UAE Disabled Sports Federation Mohamed Mohamed Fadel Hamli; Vice President Tariq Sultan bin Khadim; Majed Abdullah Usaimi Vice President of the Board of Directors UAE Disabled Sports Federation; Ahmed Salem Committee Chairman of the UAE Paralympics teams; and Ismail Alemrazik manager.



Hamli said: “The UAE team for disabled sports is always up to the challenge to repeat previous achievements which are by all accounts the culmination of all the efforts that have been made during the past several months at all levels to promote the sport of the disabled.”



Al Muhairi said: “We have a lot of faith in our para athletes and as usual they will bring honours for the nation.”



Salem said: “The Asian Para Games in Incheon will be bigger than the first event after the Guangzhou Asian Games four years ago and the UAE contingent will be up against the very best in the continent.



“The training camps in Malaysia and China have benefitted our players who are in top physical and mental condition.”



Salem praised the important roles of Alemrazik and the UAE diplomatic missions in China and in Malaysia.



“They have provided support tirelessly for the athletes and this will surely go a long way to the side winning medals” he added.
