No cases of Ebola in Oman, says WHO


(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) The World Health Organization (WHO) office in Oman said on Wednesday that there are no Ebola cases in the sultanate after rumours surfaced that a patient suffering from the disease has died in Khoula Hospital.

Speaking to Muscat Daily Dr Abdallah Assaedi WHO representative in Oman said 'No cases of Ebola have been reported in Oman or in other countries of the region to date.'

An official in Khoula Hospital the nodal centre for treatment of all Ebola virus cases in Oman also denied that any patient had died due to the disease.

Nearly 4500 people have lost their lives due to Ebola in the West African countries of Sierra Leone Guinea and Liberia.

In a statement the WHO office in Oman said that sudden onset of fever intense weakness muscle pain headache and sore throat are typical symptoms of Ebola. 'This is followed by vomiting diarrhoea rash impaired kidney and liver function and in some cases both internal and external bleeding' the statement said.

About medicines and treatments available to treat Ebola the statement said 'Currently there is no licensed medicine or vaccine for Ebola virus disease but several products are under development.'

The WHO office in Oman said that more than 100 healthcare workers have been exposed to the virus while looking after Ebola patients across the world.

'This happened because they might not have been wearing personal protection equipment or were not properly applying infection prevention and control measures when caring for the patients.

'Healthcare providers at all levels of the health system - hospitals clinics and health posts - should be briefed on the nature of the disease and how it is transmitted and strictly follow recommended infection control precautions.'
