Qatar- WISE to hold Learning Festival 2014

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) The Learning Festival 2014, by World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) is to showcase and share some of the latest developments in learning and education.

The event, organised by WISE and Katara Cultural village, begins on October 23 and is open to the public.

Mirroring the theme of this year's WISE Summit, the festival focuses on 'creative takes on the use of technology in education.' Parallel events will be held at institutions in and outside Education City.

The festival offers creative takes on the use of technology in education. Through a photo exhibition and demos, workshops and performances by leaders of the maker movement, the festival offers a state of play of the use of technology in the classroom, and showcases how makers explore simple analog and digital resources to enhance creativity.

"The festival will feature activities and give an opportunity to teachers, parents and students to gather at one place," Dr Sheikh Abdulla bin Ali Al Thani, Chairman, WISE, told a press conference to announce partnership with Katara.

"Creativity, and the education systems that nurture it, are among the most precious resources of our century. WISE has long recognised the trend, and addresses the crucial issue through its 2014 Summit. The festival is accessible to the people of Qatar, not only due to its location at Katara, but also because invited schoolchildren and teachers will experience benefits of using technology in the learning process," he added.

The photo exhibition will be devoted to work by Iranian photographer Newsha Tavakolian, whose striking images illustrate the 2014 WISE Book. It will represent 11 best practices in the use of technology to improve learning. The book will be sold at the Katara book shop.

Innovators from the Maker Movement will demonstrate how conventional media and arts can be transformed into a playful interactive journey.

The central area of the festival is dedicated to the Maker movement, featuring interactive demos and installations of some the latest creative maker projects such as LittleBits, Makey Makey, 3d printing, Paper Electronics, Arduino-based DYI kits.

Dr Khalid bin Ibrahim Al Sulaiti, General Manager, Katara, said, "We are excited to partner with WISE to organise the festival. Katara represents a prominent cultural and civilisational edifice that attracts thousands of visitors, and is the perfect home for the festival. We look forward to welcoming families to the exciting, interactive and playful journey."

The festival is open on Katara Esplanade until November 8, Tuesday-Saturday, between 5pm and 10pm.
