Recognizing Warning Signs A key step in preventing suicide

Oct. 14 2014 – Data is staggering. World Health Organization (WHO) stated that about 800000 people commit suicide globally. In USA (2011) one person committed suicide every 13 minutes. And in Canada (2009) 11.5 suicides occurred for every 100 000.

“Suicide is devastating to families. Unfortunately it may happen when the person’s mental illness has already worsened. I can’t overemphasized the need to recognize and prevent it as early as possible” says Dr. Michael G. Rayel author of soon-to-be-released book First Aid Tips for Suicidality: recognizing and preventing suicide in 4 essential steps.

“Watch out for warning signs. Suicide doesn’t happen on its own. Is there excessive depression agitation unbearable anxiety and panic attacks and frequent anger episodes? Does the person feel hopeless helpless and worthless?”

“Suicidal ideation and death wishes usually come when emotional difficulties are overwhelming or severe. When you see significant depression and anxiety assume that the person feels desperate and needs help. Never hesitate to ask about the presence of suicidal ideas or intent” Dr. Rayel states.

In Dr. Rayel’s upcoming book he introduces the CARE approach in suicide prevention. CARE is an acronym that represents the four basic step on how to recognize warning signs of suicidality what complications to anticipate if untreated and what practical steps you can do to prevent it from happening.

Aside from clarifying safety it’s crucial to check for “lethal” signs such as frequent accidents making suicide threats empty bottles next to the person’s bed buying a gun changing a will etc. Once you see additional signs Dr. Rayel emphasizes the need to call for help as soon as possible.

Dr. Rayel a board certified psychiatrist has written several books and educational games and products. First Aid Tips for Suicidality which will soon be available on Amazon smashwords and other online bookstores is part of his Shrink video and book series on psychiatric disorders and mental health issues.
