US Urges Japan to Take "Bold" Steps in TPP Talks

(MENAFN- QNA) Japan needs to take "bold" steps toward concluding Pacific free trade talks, Acting Deputy US Trade Representative Wendy Cutler said Wednesday, noting that difficult issues remain between the two sides.

"Our hope is that Japanese negotiators will be bold, and heed the words of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe" who has pledged to an early conclusion of the Trans-Pacific Partnership initiative, Cutler told reporters after wrapping up bilateral talks with Japan's deputy chief TPP negotiator Hiroshi Oe, held in Tokyo since last week.

"We were encouraged by the progress we made this week during our negotiations, but we need to underscore that the issues before us are tough," Cutler said, adding Tokyo and Washington will resume bilateral working-level talks on agricultural market access next week in Australia.
