Qatar- DFI to screen acclaimed Iraqi movies at MIA Auditorium

(MENAFN- The Peninsula) Iraqi films will be in the spotlight this weekend through Doha Film Institute's (DFI) year-round screening series 'Hekayat Khaleejiya' at the Museum of Islamic Art auditorium from today until Sunday.

Continuing in the Hekayat Khaleejiya tradition of showcasing pioneering films from the Gulf, DFI presents Stories from Iraq - two feature films and a showcase of short films - from a new generation of filmmakers.

Director Mohamed Al Daraji will be on hand to present his films In the Sands of Babylon and Son of Babylon which was selected as the Iraqi entry for the Best Foreign Language Film.

A programme of five outstanding short films by up and coming filmmakers will screen on Friday at 4pm followed by a discussion with Al Daraji.

Son of Babylon tells the story of Ahmed, a wilful young boy, who follows his equally obstinate grandmother on a journey across Iraq, driven by her determination to discover the fate of her missing son, Ahmed's father, who never returned from war.

In the Sands of Babylon is a gripping drama about an Iraqi soldier escaping from Kuwait as the army retreats in 1991. He is captured and cast into Saddam's prison system, accused of being a traitor. Outside, an Iraqi uprising instils hope for those held captive in the killing fields of Babylon. For ticket sales, film information and timings, please visit www.dohafilminstitute.com
