A recent study found that families that eat together have fewer instances of kids being bullied at school. The importance of family meals is stressed in a report from McGill University in Montreal as a way to get the kids in the family to open up about possible issues they are encountering at school such as bullying and cyberbullying.
The researchers measured exposures to cyberbullying and traditional (face-to-face) bullying and a wide range of mental health outcomes including depression anxiety substance use self-harm suicidal thoughts and suicidal attempts.
The authors of the study found that cyberbullying victimization relates more strongly to these problems in adolescents that have fewer family dinners which suggests that family contact and communication reduces some of the distressing effects of cyberbullying and strongly suggests that family meals are an important part of this dynamic.
