2 eateries ordered shut for improper storage of meat

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) 50kg of spoiled meat seized from restaurant and cafeteria in Ras Al Khaimah during intensive inspection launched in all areas of the emirate.

The RAK Municipality has ordered closure of two Asian eateries in the Baloch district for storing meat in unhealthy conditions.

Civic inspectors as part of intensive inspection raids launched in all areas of the northern emirate confiscated 50kg of spoiled meat from a restaurant and cafeteria at the Shaml area 10km to the north of the RAK city.

Khalifa Mohammed Al Maktoum Manager of the Public Health and Environment Department at the RAK Municipality said municipal inspectors seized the unfit meat from a small storeroom close to the two outlets.

“The confiscated meat proved to have been stored in an unhealthy way because the fridge was not working properly.” Initial tests showed that the freezing temperature of the fridge was below the minimum degree due in fridges or freezers used for storing meat and poultry products he added.

“Such types of foodstuff are very sensitive to temperature and mostly turn bad if not stored in a healthy way as per instructions and conditions of the RAK civic body.”

Al Maktoum said municipal inspectors having confiscated the meat which proved unfit for human consumption ordered closure of the two Asian outlets until further notice.

“Further investigations are underway and legal action and penalty including a hefty fine shall be slapped against the erring managers of the two eateries” he said noting that they started investigating the violation on October 12.

Since the violations are very dangerous and posed a grave risk to customers’ health a hefty fine is expected to be imposed on the erring restaurant and cafeteria.

“The amount of the fine is to be determined in view of the investigation to be done in the coming days.”

Al Maktoum said they were alerted that the two outlets are storing spoiled meat and hence inspectors paid a surprise visit to the eateries located opposite each other.

“The restaurant and cafeteria were apparently preparing to cook the meat and may have used the same meat in previous meals” he said noting that they will enquire about the source of the spoiled meat.
