Imran calls for judicial probe into deadly Multan stampede

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The stampede was triggered by thousands of PTI workers scrambling to exit gates of Ibne Qasim Bagh Stadium as power supply was disrupted.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairperson Imran Khan on Sunday demanded a judicial inquiry into the stampede at the end of PTI’s Multan rally which killed 7 and injured over 100 others.

The stampede was triggered by thousands of PTI workers scrambling to exit gates of Ibne Qasim Bagh Stadium as power supply was disrupted. “A third umpire is always needed whether to probe election rigging or incidents like this one” Imran said stressing the need for a fair inquiry into the incident.

While talking to media representatives before leaving for Multan Imran said PTI was also conducting an intra-party investigation and find out any lapses by local leadership of the party. The core committee of the PTI will meet in Islamabad on Monday to discuss the issue. Holding the government responsible for the incident Imran said “If you (government) lock the gates from outside and the electricity goes as well then such an incident is unavoidable.” The Punjab government had formed a three-member committee to probe the tragedy however PTI had rejected it.

Earlier PTI leader traded blame with district government Multan with Imran and vice chairperson Shah Mehmood Qureshi holding the deputy commissioner of Multan responsible for the mishap. -newskhaleejtimes.com
