12 Afghan Soldiers Martyred in Afghanistan

(MENAFN- QNA) The Afghan Ministry of Defense has confirmed that 12 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers were martyred and 18 others were injured following clashes in northern Sar-e-Pul province.

The ministry spokesman Gen. Zahir Azimi said the ANA soldiers were ambushed by Taliban militants in Laghman village of Kohistanat district, according to the Afghan (Khaama Press).

Gen. Azimi further added that the injured army personnel were taken to hospital after additional forces were deployed to fight the insurgents.

He said Taliban militants have also suffered heavy casualties following the clashes.

Gen. Azimi said an investigation has been launched after the operation ended and further details regarding the deadly incident will be released once the investigation concludes.

The Taliban militants group has not commented regarding the incident so far.

Sar-e-Pul province is among the relatively volatile provinces in northern Afghanistan where anti-government armed militant groups are active in a number of its districts and often carry out insurgency attacks.

This comes as local officials said Monday that a number of police forces were also killed or injured during the clashes.
